The 2022 Midterms have been nothing short of embarrassing for the Colorado GOP. With candidates falling short in races Republicans expected to win, many are trying to figure out what the heck happened. On Friday, speculation began that RMGO had spoiled Barb Kirkmeyer’s race for the new Congressional District 8. It was suggested that RMGO was subtly encouraging people to vote for the Libertarian candidate, who outperformed nearly every other Libertarian running despite raising no money. Needless to say, RMGO had little to do with Kirkmeyer falling short of Caravao.
On Monday, Executive Director Taylor Rhodes was interviewed by Mandy Connell from KOA to set the record straight. According to Rhodes, RMGO did not “play in any federal races,” stating that funding was being diverted from elections toward the ongoing lawsuits. He indicated that as the curator of the members’ money, it is his job to direct resources where the members want them. Thanks to the recent Bruen decision, the fight for the right to bear arms has provided an avenue to bypass the legislature and take on gun control directly. For the time being, that means focusing on fighting battles against local municipalities in the courtroom as RMGO works to revolutionize gun rights in Colorado.
When asked about potential legislative efforts to further infringe on the Second Amendment, Rhodes told Mandy that he expects the majority of the gun control initiatives to come from the local level. “When they passed [SB] 256, they were really hoping to push the responsibility down to the local level…I believe that Polis won’t sign any new legislation because he plans on running for President.” Rhodes pointed out that Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety has been moving lawyers to Denver to defend cities trying to pass unconstitutional gun control. For RMGO, the battle has become localized to an extent not seen elsewhere in the country. With that comes an entirely different game plan from years in the past, as the courtroom and grassroots activism become the tools of choice.
