McCarthy and NRA ambush gun owners, sneak Gun Control through Senate and House

In a parliamentary move reminiscent of a lame duck Democrat Congress, Democrat leadership in the Senate and House snuck H.R. 2640, the Veterans Disarmament Act, through both chambers as Congress was about to adjourn. Questions remain whether the move in the House (see below) was even legal.

In the late afternoon, the Senate passed the bill, with only Sen. Tom Coburn objecting, and so the first major gun control bill since the Assault Weapons ban headed for the House.

The problem was that the House had already sent its members home for the Christmas Holidays, and was on a Special Orders calendar (usually reserved for speeches), when gun-hater Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) moved H.R. 2640, as well as several other bills.

The official House Legislative Floor Proceedings reported that yesterday, at 5:39pm, "The House has concluded all anticipated legislative business and has proceeded to Special Order speeches."

And that's when, as we predicted on Nov. 13th, McCarthy sprang her ambush. With only a few of the 435 members of Congress present, McCarthy pushed H.R. 2640’s passage in an ethically questionable parliamentary move.

“To me, this is the best Christmas present I could ever receive," said Rep. McCarthy. That alone should send a chill down every gun owners spine.

The bottom line: McCarthy and the NRA conspired to pass a bill in the waning hours of the legislative session, catching everyone off guard, and passing a major gun control initiative while members were headed home to their districts.
